And yet only 1 in 20 say their current job is the most meaningful work they could imagine doing. That’s a massive gap between what we want and what we’ve got.

Why Meaning Beats Money

A job that pays well but leaves you feeling empty? That’s a fast track to checking out – or worse, burning out completely. We’re wired to want our work to matter. We want to feel like we’re contributing something, making a difference, or at least not wasting our limited time on this planet.

You actually have the right to expect more than just a paycheck from your job. Trust, respect, the chance to make an impact – these aren’t unrealistic demands. Thinking that work is only about money is exactly what traps people in soul-crushing jobs and leads to burnout.

On the flip side, when your work actually means something to you? Everything changes. You perform better. You’re more satisfied. You stick around longer – people who find their work highly meaningful are 69% less likely to be planning their exit. When your work matters to you, it gives you energy instead of draining it.

Finding More Meaning

Even if your current gig isn’t your dream job, there’s plenty you can do to make it feel more purposeful:

  • Connect your work to your values. What actually matters to you? Creativity? Helping people? Innovation? Find ways to bring those things into what you do. If creativity is your thing but your role feels like a hamster wheel, volunteer to lead a new project or pitch a fresh approach. If you value community, maybe start a volunteer initiative. When your daily tasks reflect what you care about, work stops feeling like such a grind.

  • Remember who you’re helping. It’s easy to get lost in deliverables and forget the actual humans on the other end. In customer support? You’re not just closing tickets – you’re solving real problems for real people. Writing code? Think about how it makes someone’s life easier. Connecting your tasks to actual outcomes makes a huge difference.

  • Build real connections. A lot of meaning comes from being part of something bigger. Mentor someone newer than you. Share what you know. Contribute ideas beyond your job description. Feeling like you belong and that you’re helping others can transform how you feel about work.

  • Define success on your own terms. Raises and promotions are fine, but also decide what non-monetary success looks like for you. Maybe it’s learning something new every day, or knowing you helped a colleague. When you broaden what “winning” means, your career becomes more rewarding even when you’re not in the perfect role yet.

  • Know when it’s time to move on. If you’ve genuinely tried to find meaning and still feel empty, that’s useful information. Sometimes a different company or career path is what you need. It’s not always easy to switch, but spending your days on something you find purposeful is worth pursuing.

Finding purpose is a personal journey, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But by actively looking for what resonates with your values – or steering toward roles that do – you can turn “just a job” into something that actually feeds your soul. Your career can and should add to your sense of meaning in life, not take away from it.
